For over 150 years, the YMCA has been offering swim lessons to children and adults of all ages and abilities. Each year, more than a million children across the country are taught water safety and swimming skills through the YMCA.

The Sterling-Rock Falls Y offers swim lessons for all ages that are designed to allow the participants to have fun in the water while learning important swimming skills. Swimmers will learn the basic skills that build on one another as the levels increase. They also learn about water safety, water sports, games and rescue.

PRE-SCHOOL AGES 3-5

PRE-WATER 1 *Formerly Pike – Increases comfort with underwater exploration and introduces basic self-rescue skills.

  • Tues 5:00-5:30pm

PRE-WATER 2 *Formerly Eel – Encourages forward movement in water and begins training in basic self-rescue skills.

PRE-WATER 3 *Formerly Ray – Continue intermediate self-rescue skills and perform longer distances. Swimmers will also work on treading water.

PRE-WATER 4 *Formerly Starfish – Introduces basic strokes technique in front crawl, back crawl and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke.

    SCHOOL AGE KIDS: AGES 6+

WATER 1 *Formerly Polliwog – Increases comfort and underwater exploration and introduces basic self-rescue skills.

WATER 2 *Formerly Guppy – Encourages forward movement in water and teaches basic self-rescue skills.

WATER 3 *Formerly Minnow – Develops intermediate self-rescue skills that are performed for longer distances. Skills learned include: roll, tread water for 1 minute and exit independently, and swim 25 yards.

WATER 4 *Formerly Fish – Introduces basic stroke techniques in front crawl and back crawl and reinforces water safety through treading water. Skills learned in this level: endurance –any stroke – 25 yards, perfect front and back crawl, survival floating, breastroke/butterfly kicks- 15 yards, treading for 2 minutes.

WATER 5 & 6 *Formerly Flying Fish/Shark – Refines stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and will review all other safety skills that have been taught. Conditioning is a big part of these two levels.

WATER A/B DISCOVER (Ages 6 months-3 years)

Introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment. Parent(s) will be in the water with their children during this class.

TEEN SWIM LESSONS (Ages 11-16)

Designed for teens between the ages of 11-16 who want to learn how to swim or to work on swim stroke development and endurance.

PRIVATE SWIM LESSONS

Package of four, 30-minute, 1-on-1 swim lessons with a certified swim instructor. Ideal for anyone who is fearful of the water, or if your child learns better in a 1-on-1 environment.
